Bangladesh is not a country that can afford to dally or placate traditional attitudes when it comes to ending hunger. It has one of the highest rates of child mortality in the world and the majority of those deaths are from causes related to hunger. 17 Sexual harassment is implicated in those deaths. The phenomenon must be dealt with seriously and immediately.It affects not only the girls and women who are subject to the acts but also leads to social violence, stops girls from being educated, promotes maternal and child mortality, keeps women from being empowered, and ultimately prevents the end of hunger. The Response Article 76 of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Ordinance and Article 509 of the Penal Code of 1860 affirm that any acts, conducts, or verbal abuses that are used to disgrace women are punishable by law. 18 In other words, sexual harassment is illegal. However, state interventions have been inadequate in stopping it to date. The law enforcing authorities have failed to protect women and girls. We must take sexual harassment seriously and bring it to a halt. We can do this through the legal system, by enforcing the laws, arresting the perpetrators, and bringing them to trial. Alongside a legal response, we must also work to alter the underlying conditions that give rise to the offenses. By raising the status of women and girls, and endeavoring to achieve gender equality, we can end the practice of sexual harassment, end hunger and uplift the quality of life for all. Film Portfolio Example Essays Film Portfolio Example Paper Film Portfolio Example Paper Double Indemnity! By Chris Hale! Director! Inspiration, aims, goals! Being a director for the first time was quite a challenging task but I really wanted to experience this role and see how much of a difference I could make towards the final film. In order to get an idea of the sort of things a director does I took a look at a couple of videos, and since our task was to replicate a scene from Double Indemnity I decided it would be a good idea to have a look at the type of styles that Billy Wilder, the director for the film, had used. After some research I found out that Billy Wilder ended to use various techniques in his films such as low key lighting and the blind effect. I decided to try and use the exact techniques in my film so I could try and replicate the same effects it had on the viewers. Planning and Research! As a director I knew planning would be a key part of my role, I had to organism several things such as getting the right actors as well as finding suitable dates to film. All in all it was quite a hard task, however I found a fantastic way of communicating with my whole film group through the use of Backbone. I made a private group for ourselves and it turned out to work very efficiently. Two examples of the communication we had going on in the group I was also able to do tasks such as find out who was available on which days of the week and to keep the group informed on our overall progress. : Here is the table I used on the Backbone group to find when our group and actors were available to film We also had a long think about the actors we were going to need for the project. We came up with a list of suitable actors and then sent them a message to see if they were at all interested in acting for our group. In the end we managed to get both our priority actors whom we thought resembled the actors in the clip the most and so we were very pleased with the result. An example of one of the conversations with our actors One of the first things we decided to do was find a location, this was actually quite an easy task as I knew my house, located in Hong Look Yen, was quite a suitable match for replicating the scene in the clip. The living room was quite spacious and towards the side was an arc which very well resembled the arc in the clip. It was also quite a convenient place for myself, the roof and the actors since everyone lived relatively near to the location. The Arc in the image above which closely resembled the on the clip to the right was a big aspect of why we decided to film in this particular house We had several discussions as a group about the story board but in the end I opted not to create a storyboard since we were replicated a clip to its exact specifications and we could always use the clip as a reference if needed. Technical details! As for the technical side of things the biggest role I played was helping out the interoperable with the lighting and the camera ISO settings. We worked together in trying various ISO settings to see if we could balance the quality and lighting to get a perfect film noir-sis feel. I also used the LED light that we were given and experimented with it to see the differences in lighting as seen in the picture below. A couple of pictures showing the difference between using the LED light (right) and not using any artificial light (left) Apart from this I had a quick look at the clips we had taken and helped the editor ecocide which clips we should use for the final production since we did take many multiple shots of the same scene Just in case on any accidents. Reflection and Evaluation! In the end I think the film turned out pretty well, however we did have a few obstacles to overcome which no doubt made our lives more difficult but at the end of the day as a whole group we were quite pleased with the final production. One of the main problems we did have was finding the right dates to film since our actors were relatively busy with other events during the periods we wanted to film, adding to this problem was that one of our actors was working for another group and so it proved to be quite a hassle trying to find a suitable date to film. In the end we were unfortunate that on the day we were planning to film one of our actors was sick and so unfortunately we were only able to film once rather than twice which is what we originally planned. But the clips from the first filming take were pretty good and so it wasnt a huge problem that we werent unable to polish the film with a second film take. I think in order to avoid this next time myself as a director have to be more organized he the dates of filming and have backup dates in case anything occurs such as one of the actors being sick. Other than that we didnt run into any other major problems. The filming itself was very successful and efficient as we only had to spend around 2 hours setting up and getting the right shots. As a director I had a clear idea of how I wanted the film to be done and so I was very clear with my cinematographer showing him exactly what I wanted and even in some cases showing him the movement I wanted of the camera angles. Battle of the Bismarck Sea in World War II Battle of the Bismarck Sea -Conflict Dates: The Battle of the Bismarck Sea was fought March 2-4, 1943, during World War II (1939-1945). Seeking to shift around 105,000 men from China and Japan, the first convoys reached Wewak, New Guinea in January and February delivering men from the 20th and 41st Infantry Divisions. This successful movement was an embarrassment to Major General George Kenney, commander of the Fifth Air Force and Allied Air Forces in the Southwest Pacific Area, who had vowed to cut off the island from re-supply. Assessing the failures of his command during the first two months of 1943, Kenney revised tactics and embarked on a rapid training program to ensure better success against maritime targets. As the Allies set to work, Vice Admiral Gunichi Mikawa began making plans to shift the 51st Infantry Division from Rabaul, New Britain to Lae, New Guinea. On February 28, the convoy, consisting of eight transports and eight destroyers assembled at Rabaul. For additional protection, 100 fighters were to provide cover. To lead the convoy, Mikawa selected Rear Admiral Masatomi Kimura. Battle of the Bismarck Sea - Striking the Japanese: Due to Allied signals intelligence, Kenney was aware that a large Japanese convoy would be sailing for Lae in early March. Departing Rabaul, Kimura originally intended to pass south of New Britain but changed his mind at the last minute to take advantage a storm front that was moving along the north side of the island. This front provided cover through the day on March 1 and Allied reconnaissance planes were unable to locate the Japanese force. Around 4:00 PM, an American B-24 Liberator briefly spotted the convoy, but the weather and time of day precluded an attack (Map). The next morning, another B-24 spotted the Kimuras ships. Due to the range, several flights of B-17 Flying Fortresses were dispatched to the area. To help reduce the Japanese air cover, Royal Australian Air Force A-20s from Port Moresby attacked the airfield at Lae. Arriving over the convoy, the B-17s began their attack and succeeded in sinking the transport Kyokusei Maru with the loss of 700 of the 1,500 men on board. B-17 strikes continued through the afternoon with marginal success as the weather frequently obscured the target area. Tracked through the night by Australian PBY Catalinas, they came within range of the Royal Australian Air Force base at Milne Bay around around 3:25 AM. Though launching flight of Bristol Beaufort torpedo bombers, only two of the RAAF aircraft located the convoy and neither scored a hit. Later in the morning the convoy came into range of the bulk of Kenneys aircraft. While 90 aircraft were assigned to striking Kimura, 22 RAAF Douglas Bostons were ordered attack Lae through the day to reduce the Japanese air threat. Around 10:00 AM the first in series of closely coordinated aerial attacks began. Bombing from around 7,000 feet, B-17s succeeded in breaking up Kimuras formation, reducing the effectiveness of the Japanese anti-aircraft fire. These were followed by B-25 Mitchells bombing from between 3,000 and 6,000 feet. These attacks drew the bulk of the Japanese fire leaving an opening for low-altitude strikes. Approaching the Japanese ships, the Bristol Beaufighters of No. 30 Squadron RAAF were mistaken by the Japanese for Bristol Beauforts. Believing the aircraft to be torpedo planes, the Japanese turned towards them to present a smaller profile. This maneuver allowed the Australians to inflict maximum damage as the Beaufighters strafed the ships with their 20 mm cannons. Stunned by this attack, the Japanese were next hit by modified B-25s flying at low-altitude. Strafing the Japanese ships, they also made skip bombing attacks in which bombs were bounced along the surface of the water into the sides of enemy vessels. With the convoy in flames, a final attack was made by a flight of American A-20 Havocs. In short order, Kimuras ships had been reduced to burning hulks. Attacks continued through the afternoon to ensure their final destruction. While the battle raged around the convoy, P-38 Lightnings provided cover from Japanese fighters and claimed 20 kills against three losses. The next day, the Japanese mounted a retaliatory raid against the Allied base at Buna, New Guinea, but inflicted little damage. For several days after the battle, Allied aircraft returned to the scene and attacked survivors in the water. Such attacks were viewed as necessary and were partially in retribution for the Japanese practice of strafing Allied airmen while they descended in their parachutes. Battle of the Bismarck Sea - Aftermath: In the fighting at Bismarck Sea, the Japanese lost eight transports, four destroyers, and 20 aircraft. In addition, between 3,000 and 7,000 men were killed. Allied losses totaled four aircraft and 13 airmen. A complete victory for the Allies, the Battle of the Bismarck Sea led Mikawa to comment a short time later, It is certain that the success obtained by the American air force in this battle dealt a fatal blow to the South Pacific. The success of Allied air power convinced the Japanese that even strongly escorted convoys could not operate without air superiority. Unable to reinforce and re-supply troops in the region, the Japanese were permanently put on the defensive, opening the way for successful Allied campaigns. Ever since I have been in college my telephone has been shorting out every time I try to have a conversation with someone on it. It has been so aggravating! Especially when I am trying to talk and the person on the other line keeps saying, what, what...What did you say? It drives me crazy! Well when I got to college I was advised, and later informed, that it was a requirement to know how to use the Internet. So I signed up for an E-mail account. In high school I never used the computer for anything but assignments, but now I constantly find myself on line. I am either E-mailing friends far away, or talking to my family on IM (Instant Message). The Net has been most helpful to me when it comes to contacting others, especially since my phone doesnt work. Most importantly, I feel that the Net has brought my family and I closer together. After I read Finding Ones Own in Cyberspace, by Amy Bruckman, an essay explaining that to enjoy the Net we need to find our own place, our own communit y, so I realized that my community on the Net is E-mail, enabling me to talk to the people closest to me. The movie You've Got Mail starring, Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, exemplifies how two people become closer through E-mail. Making it easier for people to connect in ways they always could, but never new how. Both the movie, Youve Got Mail, and Bruckmans Finding Ones Own in Cyberspace explore how the Net brings out a side of us that cannot be seen by the human eye. You've Got Mail is a love story about a man and woman who meet on the Internet and use e-mail to talk to each other. Although they havent met face to face they know so much about each other that if they were to meet, it wouldnt matter what the other person looked like. Hankss character owns a very popular bookstore that in turn makes Ryans tiny family bookstore go out of business. Therefore, Ryan hates Hanks throughout the whole movie. Everyday they seem to run into each other not knowing that the person(s) behind their face s are their soul mates. Little do they know the person they see everyday and the person that they despise is the same person they talk to every night when using E-mail or their I. Minsk: Towns are like people

Towns are like people. Some are rich and influential from their conception; others need to acquire such qualities over centuries. Minsk is an example of the latter though founded as a border fortification in the Polatsk Principality, over its millennial history Minsk has managed to be the predominant centre of power in an appanage, capital of a province and at long last the capital of an independent nation counting 10 million people. Well, as Minsk is more that 900 years, it is quite enough to speak about its antiquity. But unfortunately almost all traces of old times are lost. There are practically no ancient buildings in Minsk, but the hero-city tries to keep memory about its past. And nowadays numerous names of the streets and squares, churches remind us not about the stormy past of Minsk, but of our country. And the first place that is worth visiting is the Red Church (the church of St. Simeon and Helen). It was built in the early 20th c. under the sponsorship of the Vaynilovich family (a Slutsk judge, landowner Vaynilovich and his wife Olyrnia) who donated all their money to commemorate their children Simon and Helen who died unexpectedly of an unknown disease. Their names are given to 2 small towers, white the big one as the symbol of eternally mourning parents. The church is mainly decorated in Roman style with its majestic forms, balance, quiet strength though some details of Gothic style could also be seen. The sculptural composition of Archangel Michael who kills a winged dragon symbolizes the victory of the divine army over the forces of darkness. Nowadays, the red church building, which has already served as Belarusian SSR's National Polisk Theatre, a film studio and a cinema, has since 1990 been returned to believers, but it serves not only a religious purpose. Concerts of organ music, religious music concerts of world-famous composers are held here, one-actor theatre performances are staged and sketches are played. The Church of the Holy Trinity and St Roch on Golden Hill is another attraction. Golden Hill is the old name for this region of the town. Maybe for the wonderful golden decoration of trees, maybe for that as the legend says â€Å"the citizens collected the golden coins for the church building, this region was called Golden Hill. The church was dedicated to St. Roch, who was noted pilgrim a healer, invoked for his miraculous powers against the plague and cholera. The church is a monument f neogothic architecture. The interior of the church was of timber painted to resemble marble. On the High Altar stood a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child and a represent of the Holy Trinity. The church was restored in 1983 and given over to the nearly State Philharmonic as a small concert chamber on account of its excellent acoustics. You can't but visit St Alexander Nevski Ghurch which was built in memory of Belarusian soldiers who perished in the Russian-Turkish conflict of 1877-78 and carries a miraculous story. In June 1941 a bomb managed to pierce the church dome and fall in front of the altar without exploding. Later it was one of only two active churches in Minsk. Both of the nations celebrated poets Y. Kupala and Y. Kolas, as well as various masters of art, culture and science in Belarus, are buried in the Military cemetery alongside the soldiers who laid their lives to free Minsk from the Fascists. Even the name of the next place to see reflects the historic past of the country. That is Victory Square. The obelisk of Victory commemorates the deaths of soldiers, partisans, and all the inhabitants of Belarus killed in the struggle with fascism during WWII. Its height is 38 m. It is covered by grey granite. It is topped by the Order of Victory which is decorated by multi-coloured smelt. The Eternal Flame was inflamed on the 3 d of July in 1961 and bright scarlet flowers seem to bum together with the flame till late autumn. Well, I suppose that nobody can resist the temptation of visiting one of the chief glories of Minsk – Trinity Suburb. It is a tangle of narrow streets lined with a fascinating array of little craft and curio shops. Delightful small houses seem to whisper their secrets to each other across the cobbled way. Here you have a feeling of coming back into the 18th c. Suburb is renowned for its historic buildings. You can enjoy the view of the Holy Spirit Cathedral and the church of St. Paul and Peter also can be seen here. Not far from these sacred places, on a bend in the river Svisloch there is a humpback bridge leading to the Isle of Tears, the monument to the sons of Fatherland who died beyond its borders. The monument is designed in the shape of a temple. It stands on 16 piles which go deep into swampy soil. In the centre of the monument there are figures of mourning mothers, who personify Belarusian women crying over their dead sons. Some of them hold icons in their hands, others – portraits of their sons. Mothers, standing at the front, hold lamps which symbolize the warmth of home health. Inside there are altars with the inscribed names of 771 dead soldiers. In the middle of the monuments there is the sacred Place where the Bells of Memory are ringing. Weeping willows bend over the water. So you see, there are a lot of sights in Minsk that are connected with the history of Belarus. Their beauty and their historical heritage attract thousands of tourists from all over the world and make Minsk and amazing place, which is really worth seeing.

In Both Sylvia Plath’S The Bell Jar And Kate Chopin’S The

In both Sylvia Plath’s The Bell Jar and Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, the female protagonist is portrayed as an artist who suffers from mental instability. Although the works were written over 60 years apart, The Awakening in 1889 and The Bell Jar in 1963, both novels were revolutionary for their times in terms of feminism, extramarital sex, and suicide. Both works explore the ways that females may temporarily escape, or attempt to escape, the confines of their own minds: the chains that lead them to attempt or complete suicide. Each woman finds brightness in her art, Edna with her painting and Esther through writing, immersion in water, and the ability to embrace her sexuality. She even has Madame Ratignolle â€Å"feel [her] sho ulder blades, to see if [her] wings were strong† hoping that she too has wings to allow her to fly away from the expectations of tradition set on her (Chopin 300.) While Edna expresses that she is â€Å"not thinking of any extraordinary flights,† to Arobin, she does not deny her wish to fly, and escape from society (300). Unlike before, when Edna wishes to have wings, in this instance Edna realizes that she has wings, or the power to escape. This changes her true desires from wanting to fly to not becoming one of the â€Å"weaklings bruised, exhausted, fluttering back to earth† (300). Although Edna has not acted upon her thoughts to become free, she is aware that she has the power to escape and live outside of society. Through the bird symbolism, Chopin suggests that women lack the ability to be happy within the circumstances society expects them to maintain. Both women also find freedom through immersion in water. In The Bell Jar, Esther Greenwood finds freedom in her baths.
